12-Hour Piece

Probably my best piece all year. This was done on a massive scale of about 3' x 3'. A LOT larger than I am used to. This was obviously a nude model. This picture took up two whole studio classes of 6 hours each, so I guess you could say this took me 12 hours to complete. It is a pure mixture of white conte crayon, compressed charcoal, vine charcoal, and I believe some black conte crayon is in there also. I'm pretty proud of this piece and sure a lot more could be done to it, but 12 hours pretty much blew my mind as it is the longest I've ever worked on a single piece of art in traditional media. The other two below shots are just details of course, but click on them all to enlarge them and take a better look!

Sketchy Portrait

This is a full portrait. Maybe you could call it and extended bust shot. This is a model at school and this picture took about and hour and a half to complete. This was me getting so frustrated with my picture that I just started to sketch. There wasn't much drawing here. This was completed I believe in compressed charcoal on charcoal paper that was about 24"x30". Larger than I was used to but it is one of my more favorite pieces. The picture below is a detail shot of the head. Not much detail to show, but enough that I thought it deserved a better shot. Click on them to enlarge them.

Portrait

By far this is NOT my favorite portrait I've ever done, however I did enjoy the clothing on this piece. This was done by a model who sat for about 3 hours for this picture. It was finished in class on a piece around 18"x24" with charcoal on charcoal paper. More or less technical stuff here. Again, not my best or favorite.

Hand Study

This is just a little hand study I did for a class as part of a drawing suite. It is basically a series of drawings that have something to do with one another. This first drawing is done with Conte Crayons which is basically charcoal and graphite mixed with wax. These are all my left hands except for one hand in one of the pieces is actually my right hand. These were all completed on watercolor paper that was approximately 18"x24".

This second set of hands are all pencils and inks. I had originally wanted to do watercolors on top, but 1. I ran out of time and 2. I am not the best "watercolorer" in the world, but I do love my inks and pencils. It is much more precise and not a lot of washing with colors. There are subtle ink washes in here with a few different layers and the overall feel was that it was a large page from a sketchbook. This is the one of the three that houses my right hand drawn with my right hand. How in the...?
By far the most fun-looking of the three, but this one was the hardest to work on for me. It seems that drawing everyday things like hands with odd colors is quite the task. I'm not used to seeing them in greens and oranges, so when I tried to draw them with those colors is never quite felt right. This was a fun one to do however, just a little tougher because of the colors. These are all just colored pencils...no regular pencil here. The blue pencil in the ink drawing was actually a blue drafting mech pencil whereas this blue here is all colored pencil.
